Sheinbaum Addresses Tariff Threats Ahead of Rally

President Claudia Sheinbaum led her morning conference on Wednesday, March 5, from the National Palace, accompanied by the Secretary of Labor, Marath Bolaños. During the conference, Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce of the United States, mentioned that Donald Trump is considering the possibility of eliminating the tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada, to which Sheinbaum expressed: "It's not very patriotic, to say the least, because I don't think they agree, but if they do, it would be good if they said so if they are in agreement."

Sheinbaum emphasized that despite Trump's tariffs, there would be no economic impacts on social programs in Mexico. She even suggested the possibility of seeking other trading partners if necessary, to safeguard the country's sovereignty. The president also received a call of solidarity from the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, regarding Trump's measures.

Regarding the imposition of tariffs by the United States, Sheinbaum did not rule out the possibility of seeking alliances with Canada and other Latin American countries. In response to criticisms from the opposition, the president sent them a message urging them to join in rather than criticize. Additionally, Sheinbaum anticipated a scheduled call with Donald Trump set for Thursday, March 6.

On another note, regarding the progress in the recovery of the 63 miners trapped in Pasta de Conchos, Marath Bolaños reported that out of 63 bodies, 13 have been recovered, 5 identified, and returned to their families. At the same time, changes in labor rights for platform workers such as Uber and Didi were announced, which will come into effect on June 22, 2025, with specific guidelines scheduled for publication on June 27.
